Hand Carved Sculpture in Stages
In planning an open studio, I pulled out all my incomplete work and rediscovered this long forgotten unfinished basswood carving. A few months later, it called to me and I decided it was time to push it over the finish line for an exhibition in the spring.
In planning an open studio, I pulled out all my incomplete work and rediscovered this long forgotten unfinished basswood carving. A few months later, it called to me and I decided it was time to push it over the finish line for an exhibition in the spring.
I began by penciling in and carving new leaf-like shapes on the two remaining blank sides of the wooden block.
Some ideas were drawn, erased, and redrawn.
Can you see all the small details still in need of fine tuning?
Getting this right takes a while but makes all the difference in the final piece. I do this outside under bright sunlight rotating the piece back and forth making the flaws much easier to see and correct.
Raised grain
You can see the wood grain is visibly raised after the first clear coat of clear matte polycrylic. (above)
The surface looks much smoother after simply sanding the raised grain. (below)
Five to six rounds of sanding and coating are required to bring out a silky smooth matte finish.
This is a lot of work but I think it is worth the effort.
What do you see in this wood carving?
Some say they see leaves while others say flames or ripples.
I enjoy hearing what people think.
